Would you believe that can openers can hold as much bad bacteria such as blenders and worktops, e.coli, salmonella and yeast bacteria can all find their home in all of these places, so we need to know how to clean them properly.

Struggling to get that sponge in all of the fiddly bits when trying to clean that can opener? Then stress no more! Turns out cleaning a can opener is really easy and can be used on many other things.

First things first – soak the can opener

Vinegar, white or apple cider works great for cleaning off the rust and residue off the gears on your can opener, just fill a jug with one of the above and leave the can opener submerged in there for around 15 – 20 minutes.

second step – scrub away

After the first step the grime on the can opener should be loose if it hasn’t already come away in the jug. Get yourself a small brush (Toothbrushes work great here) and work over the can opener. No problem if it still looks a bit grim after the first attempt, just repeats both steps until clean.

and finally – clean the gears

Though your can opener will look nice and clean after the first 2 steps there’ll still be a good chance that there’ll be residue on the gears. All you need to do is clamp the can opener onto a towel as if you’re trying to open a can, and give it a full turn.
